The Writer’s Learning Curve

When I started this writing journey, I was naive to the complexities of it all. I guess in it’s most basic state, writing is just me and the words on the screen or paper. It’s when I started sharing those words that things changed. Here are ten things I learned since I started (in no […]

Love It or Hate It — The Written Word Was Meant To Be Interpreted

I’m going to say something possibly unpopular and perhaps a bit strange. I hate the children’s book The Giving Tree, even though oddly, it was my favorite book. I remember being five and reading the story and just weeping for the tree, feeling devastated. Understanding what she was feeling. I recall hating the boy and the self-centered […]

Star Wars: The Anticipation Awakens

At one point in my 2012 film, Secrets of the Desert Nymph, one of the characters encourages his best friend to go after the girl of his dreams before it’s too late. When his friend finally agrees, he’s boggled by the idea that he do it right that minute.

The exchange:

“You mean now?”

“No. When episode seven hits theaters.”

Of course, this was when it was a well-known fact that George Lucas wasn’t ever going to release another Star Wars film. The joke was meant to mean if he didn’t do it right that minute, he never would.

Cut to one year later and the announcement that Disney bought Lucasfilm and its entire film library for $4 billion dollars. Disney’s second announcement — Episode 7 was coming, and it was coming fast. And even though it makes the joke in a three-year-old movie seem as dated as the fight over Beta and VHS, I couldn’t be more excited. Find Out More

Point Break and the Xerox Era of Hollywood

I just viewed the trailer for the so-called remake of the 1991 classic, Point Break, and from what I saw — there are all kinds of wrong here that need to be addressed. Before I do, here’s the trailer:

This is a remake as much as the Teletubbies are role models. Other than using the names Bodhi and Utah, there is almost no resemblance to the original film. Continue Reading!

World Chaos Roundup #2

This week in my World Chaos News Roundup, I discuss the exit of a dancing scream queen, the unnecessary plan to provide adults with more “free” education, and the omissions of both a beloved film from the biggest award show and a politician from the biggest march in French history.

World Chaos Roundup #1

With a new year under way, I wanted to try a little something new for my blog. Along with Movie Mayhem and the continuing adventures of Write A Novel With Me, I’m going to add a new weekly (or bi-weekly in some cases) post with my thoughts on events and news items that sparked my interest — or in some cases, my ire — as well as anything exciting that is news-worthy as it relates to my life and career. I don’t know how long this will last, or if anyone will even find it interesting, but it’s worth a shot. And please, whether you agree or disagree, don’t hesitate to leave your thoughts on these items in the comments section below.

In this, the first full full week of 2015, I will discuss the drop in movie attendance, the picks for Hall of Fame induction and a couple of movie-related items.

My thoughts are just a click away

Teach a Man To Fish…

This blog post is actually a few days late — I wanted to post this on Monday — but I had to play major catch-up early this week and I had a long day of networking yesterday, so the post got relegated to the back-back burner. But now that I’ve got caught up on a few things, I finally have time to settle in and focus on this recap of my past week, and the information overload I experienced. Carpe Diem – RIP Robin Williams

One of the categories I have on this blogs television awards is the award for a show that’s gone too soon. This year, I was going to give that award to The Crazy Ones, and now there’s an even bigger reason to honor that show with such an accolade, as of around noon today, prolific actor, comedian and Oscar award winner Robin Williams was found dead in his home. Be Honest, Be Yourself

On a recent episode of Hell’s Kitchen, Gordon Ramsey, as he usually does at some point in every episode, chewed out a contestant for one reason or another. Though it’s familiar territory for all of the chefs, this seems to hit this one pretty hard, so after the dinner service is over, he goes up to one of Ramsey’s sous chefs and asks her how she does it — how she can work with Gordon day in and day out, especially after making a mistake or two during a service. She tells him that he can’t take it personally, and that whenever she has a day where nothing goes right, she simply wakes up the next morning and says, “today’s a new day.” Don’t Stop — There’s Plenty More
