A Better Way To Fix a Broken Health Care System

To begin my discussion on what I believe is the right (and best) way to “fix” health insurance, I wanted to go a little deeper into some of President Obama’s key points about his own (inevitably) disastrous ideas to do just that. The following are excerpts from President Obama’s campaign speech from October 30, 2013 in regards to the Affordable Care Act and the opposition against it (with my thoughts/translations in parenthesis): Don’t Stop — There’s Plenty More

Movie Mayhem – The Counselor

Being able to identify the genre of a film is a lot like eating comfort food—it allows us a chance to find what fits our mood and know what we’re getting into before we sit down for a couple of hours with our buttery box of popcorn and sweets. When it’s not clear what you’re about to get, sometimes it can be uncomfortable and other times it can be plain dreary, especially when the film itself doesn’t even really know for sure. Is it a crime drama? A drug smuggling thriller? A snooze fest? Herein lies the main problem with Ridley Scott’s new film, The Counselor, which never answers that question with much authority, wanting to be all of those things (well, maybe not a snooze fest, but I digress) without a clear purpose. A Must-See Vampire Tale

This past weekend, I took a trip to Arizona to once again attend the award-winning dance opera, Lisa Starry’s A Vampire Tale, at the Phoenix Theatre Little Theatre. Written, directed and choreographed by Lisa Starry, owner of the Scorpius Dance Theatre—which presents this terrific show for two weeks every October—Lisa Starry’s A Vampire Tale is a play of love, desire, loss and transformation told almost entirely through dance. It focuses on Eve (also known as “the Innocent”) who finds herself caught in the den of a vampire klan led by the evil Vampire Queen and her love, Viktor. When Viktor takes a very infatuated liking to Eve (and her human nature), the jealous Queen does whatever it takes to end his desire for both. Don’t Stop — There’s Plenty More

Movie Mayhem – Escape Plan

It’s not a secret that Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone were action movie rivals throughout the eighties and early nineties, squaring off against each other at the box office with films including The Terminator, Tango and Cash, Total Recall and Stop, or My Mom Will Shoot… okay, maybe not so much the last one, but the closest the boys ever got to teaming up was poking fun at each other within their films (Stallone as the terminator in Last Action Hero, or President Schwarzenegger in Demolition Man). That all changed with Stallone’s successful attempt to bring the eighties back to the big screen with The Expendables, but Schwarzenegger only made a minor cameo, which was more an inside joke than anything else. With the prison-escape movie, Escape Plan, we finally get to see the two team up for real. Don’t Stop — There’s Plenty More

Does Integrity Even Matter Anymore?

For as long as there have been “intelligent” humans, there has been corruption, bribery and blackmail in all levels of society. But no more prominent has it been than in the areas of organized crime and politics, which, if I didn’t know any better, seems to have become one and the same. Politicians, much like a mob boss, have made a business out of using such tactics to get things done. The difference is, most mob bosses, to a certain degree, hold a high level of integrity, whereas the majority of politicians have none whatsoever. And yet we continue to support them, even though it completely undermines and sours the meaning of compromise, negotiation and debate, the true cornerstones of any free republic. Shutdown Wake Up Call

It takes a real man to shut down an establishment that actually produces revenue for the government while not taking a dime, just because said establishment sits on government land. I jest, of course, but this type of thing seems to be the most recent tactic thrown out by the current administration to hurt the American public in a deliberate and blatant attack on anyone who thinks the government should be smaller—less Big Brother and more protective older brother. Movie Mayhem – Captain Phillips

Back in 2006, I listed United 93, Paul Greengrass’s captivating look at the events of 9/11, as my number one film of the year. The way in which Greengrass genuinely conveyed the emotion, the claustrophobia, the intensity and the fear of those several heart-pounding and incredible hours was nothing short of mesmerizing (and he did so with mostly unknown and non-actors only five years after the events). With Captain Phillips, Greengrass once again takes on a very recent true event and creates an emotionally compelling film. The only difference this time is that he had a little help with the likes of Tom Hanks as the title character. Don’t Stop — There’s Plenty More

Can I Just Say…

For a show about the extraordinary, The Tomorrow People is rather quite ordinary.
